Should you do your own hair and makeup or pay someone to do it?

As a photographer who specializes in boudoir photography, I often get asked whether it is necessary to pay for professional hair and makeup services for a photo shoot and what type of hair and makeup should you get. To put it into perspective, it's important to understand that a boudoir session is all about feeling confident, sexy, and empowered. It's an intimate experience that deserves the attention to detail and preparation to make it truly unforgettable.

Now, on the topic of hair and makeup, there are certainly pros and cons to both doing your own versus hiring a professional. Let's start with doing your own. For starters, it's definitely the more cost-effective option. It also gives you complete control over your look, as you know your face and hair better than anyone else. However, there are some downsides to consider. For one, the pressure of creating a flawless look yourself can add unwanted stress to an already emotionally charged occasion. Plus, you may not have the same skills or knowledge as a professional when it comes to achieving camera-ready hair and makeup that will withstand the demands of a photo shoot. The way you do your makeup for everyday or a night out on the town and the way you do make up for a photo shoot is very different.

On the other hand, hiring a professional hair and makeup artist can have many benefits. For one, they have years of experience under their belt and have honed their skills to perfection. This means they can assess your unique features and create a look that compliments them beautifully. It also ensures that your hair and makeup will be perfectly suited to the camera, as they know what looks work best for photography lighting and angles. Another huge benefit is the relaxation factor. Sitting in the makeup chair and letting a pro take care of your beauty needs can be a calming experience that gets you in the right headspace for your shoot. It also gives us a chance to get to know you better. We always have great conversations while you are in the chair. One thing we talk about is the type of look you want to achieve for your session. Do you want a more natural look or go all in with a full glam makeup. My team has years of experience to help you make the best decision for your boudoir session.

What is the difference you ask? That's a great question! The truth is the difference between these makeup styles is all in the level of intensity and the finished look. Natural makeup, as the name suggests, aims to enhance one's natural features while still looking effortless and fresh-faced. This style of makeup usually consists of minimal foundation, light eye makeup, a subtle lip color, and just a touch of blush to add a healthy glow. Natural makeup is perfect for those who want to look put together without feeling like they're wearing a lot of makeup. On the other hand, full glam makeup is all about the drama and you know I am here for the drama!!! This style of makeup is known for its intense and bold features that make a statement. Full glam makeup usually consists of a full coverage foundation, heavy eye makeup (usually equipped with dark and shimmery colors), a bold lip color, and enough highlighter to light up the room. If you fall somewhere in the middle, then Soft Glam may be for you.

It's important to note that both natural makeup and full glam makeup require skill and technique to accomplish. My professional team is trained to work on all types of skin tones and textures. While natural makeup may look effortless, it takes a lot of careful blending and product placement to achieve that fresh-faced look. And while full glam makeup may be bold and trendy, it also requires precision and attention to detail to avoid looking too overdone.

In conclusion, while getting your hair and makeup professionally done for a boudoir session is not mandatory, it can certainly add to the overall experience. Doing your own hair and makeup has its advantages but can also add stress to an already emotional occasion. Hiring a pro may be a bit more expensive but can offer peace of mind, relaxation, and a flawless final look that's guaranteed to make you feel confident and beautiful. Whatever you decide, remember that the most important thing is to feel comfortable and empowered, so go with what feels right for you. As a female photographer, I am here to guide you every step of the way and create stunning images that you'll treasure for a lifetime.
